Abstract

Much has been written about the boom in sheltered housing for sale to the elderly, and housebuilders are becoming increasingly aware of the potential of this market. Studies by learned groups have put the annual demand for sheltered units at approximately 20,000 with an estimated maximum potential of some 250,000 to 400,000.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the future of business education, and in particular the MBA programs, in the current economic recession.

Design/methodology/approach

This viewpoint looks at MBA programs and the role they play in today's turbulent economic climate.

Findings

The paper discusses the many different MBA programs at Manchester Business School, and the importance of business schools and their research.

Originality/value

Business schools can play an important role in terms of developing the models and the knowledge that can help executives better understand how the new economy evolves, how one can build up more sustainable financial structures and leadership styles, and be part of it. When the world changes dramatically as it does at the moment, innovative thinking may be needed, either to create new models or reaffirm forgotten ones. That is when businesses perceive the greatest benefits of academic advice. Business schools will be part of this equation, through teaching on their MBA courses and through their research.

Abstract

The research on which this report is based was carried out between 1979 and 1980. The main part of that research concerned the effects of the one year industrial training that constituted the third year of a four‐year degree in Business Studies on the orientations to work of students of this course.

Abstract

Notes how the value of developing corporate identity (CI), as a means of encouraging an organization's key stakeholders to perceive the corporate entity in a clear and positive way, has been receiving increased attention in the last decade. To date much of the practitioner and academic attention has been focused on the communication function between an organization and its customers (primarily). In order that managers and academics are able to realize more of the potential that CI offers organizations, it is necessary to consider the role and impact CI can have on strategic management. Reviews the literature and considers the concepts of corporate identity, image, reputation and personality. Determines the linkages between these concepts and argues that image research studies should not just be oriented to improving images and communications but that this information can also have a central role to play in the strategic development of an organization. To do this presents a framework, referred to as a corporate identity management process (CIMP). Provides an illustration which shows how an understanding of stakeholder images can be used, via the CIMP, to reveal opportunities for developing sustainable competitve advantage.
